**Problem 1:** If we have four bags each containing a set of five books inside it, how many total books do we have?

**Solution: **We can find the total number of books by addition which will be repeated addition or multiplication

**.**

We have 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20

5 times four is $5 \times 4$

Number of objects in each group become multiplicand and number of groups is multiplier. So here 5 is multiplicand and 4 is multiplier.

The answer of multiplication is called as product, $5 \times 4 = 20$

Answer : 20 is the product of 5 and 4.

Problem 2: Product of $6 \times 3$ = ?

**Solution:**six times three , add 6 three times OR get $6 \times 3$ from the multiplication table.

6 + 6 + 6 = 18

**Answer :** So, $6 \times 3$ = 18

**Multiplication of 2 digit by 1 digit number**

Let us learn multiplication of 2 digit by a single digit number.

**Problem 3:** Product of $17 \times 6$ is ?

Solution: $17 \times 6$

**Step 1:**Here 17 is the multiplicand and 6 is the multiplier.

Here we multiply the unit's number in multiplicand i.e. 7 with 6 .

$7 \times 6 = 42$

**Step 2:**This is again a two digit number. We take only the number at unit's (ones ) place (2) and write it down below the line at unit's place. We will carry over the 4 (number in 10's place).

Now multiply the tens digit i.e 1 by 6

$6 \times 1 = 6$.

Now add this 6 to 4 which was carried over and write the total in front of 2.

**Answer : **So the product of $17 \times 6$ is 102.
